How to Spot a Fake Chanel Bag

3. Stitching

4. Hardware and chain

The chain should feel substantial and well-made, with leather woven smoothly through it on classic flaps. Hardware is heavy with crisp, even engraving and the correct finish (gold, silver, or ruthenium depending on the era). Lightweight, shiny, or roughly stamped hardware is a warning sign.

5. Serial number and card

Authentic Chanel bags from the relevant eras have a serial number on a sticker inside, traditionally paired with an authenticity card whose number matches. Newer bags use embedded microchips. Note that serials and cards are widely faked, so they confirm nothing on their own — but a mismatched, missing, or wrong-format number is a strong red flag.

6. Leather, smell, and price

Genuine lambskin or caviar leather feels supple and high quality and smells like real leather. A "new" Classic Flap at a fraction of retail, from an unverified seller, is almost never genuine — Chanel rarely discounts.
