Ring Metals Compared: 14K, 18K, White Gold, Platinum

Nobody chooses a ring metal twice. Hardness, plating and how the alloy behaves when it is scratched matter more over thirty years than the colour you picked in the shop.

The metal is the decision people spend the least time on and then live with the longest. The stone gets weeks of research; the band gets picked from three colours in a tray. That is backwards, because the stone will look identical in thirty years and the metal is the part that thins, plates, tarnishes, reacts with skin, and decides whether the ring can ever be made bigger. Three things actually matter: how the alloy behaves when it is scratched, whether it needs maintaining, and what it is doing to the finger underneath.

Karat is a purity fraction and nothing else

Twenty-four parts is the whole. A karat number tells you how many of those parts are gold, which is why the trade prefers the three-digit fineness stamp: it is the same fact without arithmetic. Everything else in the ring — colour, hardness, whether your finger goes green — comes from the parts that are not gold.

In the United States nothing below 10K may legally be called gold; the UK sells a great deal of 9K, and 22K is the everyday standard across much of South Asia. A high number is not a better ring, it is a different set of trade-offs — and a more expensive one, since you are buying more gold by weight.

The myth: lower karat is tougher

Pure gold is genuinely soft — around 30 on the Vickers scale, softer than a copper coin. So people reason downward from there and conclude 14K must beat 18K. Look at the hardness of the alloys the trade actually casts and the ranking falls apart.

The lesson is that hardness comes from what the other fraction is, not how much of it there is — so “18K scratches more easily” is a rule of thumb that the actual numbers do not support.

Which raises the more useful question. Hardness describes resistance to being marked. It says nothing about where the metal goes.

Scratching removes gold and only moves platinum

Scratch a gold ring and a small amount of metal is carried away. Do it for twenty years, add a polish at the counter each time it is cleaned, and the shank measurably thins — which is why old bands wear through at the bottom and need a new section soldered in. Scratch platinum and the metal is displaced rather than lost: it burrs sideways into a soft grey sheen collectors call patina, and the mass stays on your finger.

That is the real durability difference, and no hardness table shows it. If you like a mirror finish, platinum will need re-polishing to keep it and gold will quietly get thinner every time you ask for the same thing.

Gold is polished away. Platinum is pushed around. Over a lifetime that single distinction matters more than any number on a hardness chart.

White gold is a coating, and coatings are a subscription

There is no white gold. There is gold alloyed with nickel or palladium to pull it towards grey, and then rhodium plating a few microns thick to make it properly white. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal trading well above gold, but the layer is so thin that the plating is cheap and the labour is most of the bill.

It wears. Typical service life on a ring worn every day is 12 to 24 months, and it goes first at the bottom of the shank where the finger, the desk and the steering wheel do their work. Replating a plain ring commonly runs $50 to $120 and more where stones have to be protected. Over forty years that is a real line item, and it is the reason people are surprised when their “white” ring starts looking faintly yellow at the back.

If maintenance annoys you, the answer is not a different plating — it is a metal that is white all the way through. Platinum and palladium never need it. Palladium-alloyed white gold looks less bright unplated but does not go obviously warm when the rhodium goes.

Platinum stopped being the expensive one

The received wisdom is that platinum costs roughly twice as much as gold. That was true for a long time and it is no longer true: platinum has traded well below gold per ounce for years. What platinum still has is density — a platinum band contains far more grams than the same band in gold, which claws a lot of the difference back.

Volume is modelled as a plain flat band, so a pierced or carved design will hold less and a heavy signet a great deal more. Default prices are spot figures from early September 2026 — gold near $4,400 an ounce, platinum near $1,810, palladium near $1,380, silver near $66 — and they will be stale by the time you read this. What survives the price moves is the shape of the answer: a platinum band lands somewhere between 14K and 18K gold, and palladium undercuts almost everything white.

So why does the platinum ring in the case still cost more? Bench time. Platinum is worked at around 1,700 °C against gold's 1,060 °C, which means dedicated torches, crucibles, and investment; it cannot share scrap or tooling with a gold job; and it is gummy under a file where gold cuts cleanly. You are paying for the workshop, not the ounce.

If your skin reacts, it is usually nickel

A red or itchy band under a ring is most often contact dermatitis from nickel in a white gold alloy. The EU regulates it: under entry 27 of REACH Annex XVII an article in prolonged skin contact may not release more than 0.5 µg of nickel per cm² per week. The United States has no equivalent general limit, so an imported ring bought cheaply can be well over the European line.

  • Safe routes. Platinum, palladium, palladium-alloyed white gold, and high-karat yellow — less alloy means less of whatever is bothering you.
  • Check it is an allergy first. Soap and water trapped under a band irritates skin all by itself, and so does a ring worn while washing up. Take it off for a week and see.
  • Rhodium is not a fix. It is a barrier while it lasts, and the reaction returns exactly when the plating wears.

The metals that can never be made bigger

Titanium, tungsten carbide, ceramic and stainless steel are sold on price and on hardness, and both claims are true. What is rarely explained is that they cannot be soldered like a precious metal, so the ring you buy is the only size that ring will ever be. Tungsten in particular is so hard and so brittle that the standard emergency removal is to crack it in locking pliers rather than cut it — genuinely useful in a hospital, less useful when a finger has simply changed shape over a decade.

They are a reasonable choice for a plain wedding band on a hand whose size is settled, and the wrong choice for a ring meant to last through forty years and three finger sizes. Check which category you are in before you buy — the ring size guide covers what can and cannot be adjusted later.

Choosing, in one paragraph

For a ring worn every day: platinum 950 if you want white and never want to think about it again, 18K yellow if you want warmth, value density and a hard alloy, 14K yellow if you want the same thing for less gold, and palladium 950 if you want white, light and cheap in metal terms. Choose white gold with your eyes open about the replating, choose rose gold if you like it because it needs nothing, and keep sterling silver for jewellery you are happy to see age. The takeaway

Buy the metal for how it behaves, not for the number stamped in it. Higher karat is not softer in practice, platinum is no longer the expensive metal by weight, and white gold comes with a bill that arrives every eighteen months for the rest of the ring's life. Decide first whether you want a metal that needs maintaining, then pick a colour — that order gets it right, and the reverse order is how people end up mildly disappointed in year three.
